Trump Attacks Biden, Harris Fires Back
Throughout the debate, Trump seemed to be on offense, continuously attacking President Joe Biden for lacking performance since he dropped out of the Presidential race.
“Where is our president? We don’t even know if he’s the president,” Trump said toward the end of the debate. “They threw him out of a campaign like a dog. We don’t even know. Is he our president? We have a president that doesn’t know he’s alive.”
Harris replied, “It is important to remind the former president: You’re not running against Joe Biden; you are running against me.”
Harris Talks on Future Immigration policy.
Davis Muir asked, “Why did the administration wait until six months before the election to act and would you have done anything differently from President Biden on this?”
Muir mentioned that undocumented immigrants came to the country in record numbers, and Harris didn't do anything about it until six months ago. Harris stated that a border security bill had been introduced in Congress that included many conservatives and would enact 1500 additional border agents to prevent undocumented immigrants from bringing fentanyl into the country. She apologized formally to the families affected by fentanyl. She attacked Trump and said, “Donald Trump got on the phone, called up some folks in Congress, and said kill the bill. And you know why? Because he preferred to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. And understand, this comes at a time where the people of our country actually need a leader who engages in solutions." She said that during her presidency, if elected, she will increase the amount of resources to allow us to prosecute transnational criminal organizations for trafficking in guns, drugs, and humans. Additionally, she said that in the last six months, she imposed tough new asylum restrictions and plans to continue this.
Trump's Response to Immigration Rates
“Why wait six months for something when we need it now” Trump responded and also said how the Biden-Harris administration “destroyed the fabric of our country” allowing all of these illegal immigrants to come into our country. He noted how because of them crime rates have fallen in every country in the world except us and the unemployment rate is going "through the roof".
“Crime in this country is through the roof. And we have a new form of crime. It's called migrant crime. And it's happening at levels that nobody thought possible.”
Trump Distances Himself From Project 2025
Project 2025 is a list that many conservatives made that would continue to centralize control in the executive branch and further remove civil servants from policy making decisions while crushing abortion rights nationwide and pushing forward on a complete anti immigrant agenda.
She responded to a question about the economy by saying Trump had left them with the worst unemployment rate ever. After the moderator said covid played a big role in that, Kamala Harris attacked Trump and questioned his alignment with Project 2025. “What you're going to hear tonight is a detailed and dangerous plan called Project 2025 that the former president intends on implementing if he were elected again.”
Trump responded and said “Number one, I have nothing to do, as you know and as she knows better than anyone, I have nothing to do with Project 2025. That's out there. I haven't read it. I don't want to read it, purposely. I'm not going to read it. This was a group of people that got together, they came up with some ideas. I guess some good, some bad. But it makes no difference. I have nothing to do—everybody knows I'm an open book.”
Trump's Statements on Abortion
“I pledge to you: When Congress passes a bill to put back in place the protections of Roe v. Wade as president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law. But understand, if Donald Trump were to be re-elected, he would sign a national abortion ban.”
Trump Responds and contradicts Kamala Harris's message because he said that “Well, there she goes again. It's a lie. I'm not signing a ban. And there's no reason to sign a ban. Because we've gotten what everybody wanted.” During his term as President, Trump left abortion up to the states. He mentioned during the debate that everyone for 52 years wanted to go to the states, and he finally did. When asked about his abortion beliefs, in which he believes in a ban after 15 weeks, he said abortion should not be performed in the ninth month because “after birth, its execution, no longer abortion, because the baby is born, is okay. And that's not okay with me."
